Updating a story we have been following for several weeks, the federal government is asking for a nationwide Takata airbag recall
The defective airbags have been recalled geographically, in areas with high humidity, as they are more likely to experience complications there. The airbags can reportedly explode and hit passengers with shrapnel. According to CNN, at least four U.S. drivers of Honda and Acura cars are believed to have been killed by the airbags.
Recently, a wrongful death lawsuit was filed in Florida over a death linked to the airbags.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is reportedly seeking a nationwide expansion of recall efforts after it was discovered that a second airbag exploded in a location outside the area covered by the regional recall, according to CNN.
The NHTSA reported that Takata could “face a fine of up to $35 million if it does not agree to the nationwide recall.” The recall has affected more than 14 million vehicles worldwide, including BMW, Chrysler, Ford, General Motors, Honda, Mazda, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Subaru and Toyota models.
