When Will it End? GM Recalls Half-Million More Vehicles

Once again, General Motors (GM) announced another massive recall on June 13. According to Reuters, the recall affects 511,528 Chevrolet Camaros.

This recall concerns a faulty ignition switch that is similar to the issues plaguing other models. The automotive company says it is aware of minor injuries occurring because of Camaros with this problem. However, defective ignition switches on other models are linked to 13 deaths.

GM said that the switch defects on the Camaros and other models are different. However, Reuters points out that the issues seem related:

  • On the Camaro, the vehicle may shut off if a driver’s knee bumps the key fob while in the “run” position in the ignition switch.
  • On all small model cars made by GM, the engine may shut off if the key fob is bumped while in the “run” position in the ignition switch.

In total, 3.1 million vehicles have been recalled due to switch issues. Rep. Henry Waxman (D-Ca.) said that it is worrisome “about how pervasive the problem is and why it is taking so long for GM to act.” Waxman is on the House Energy and Commerce Committee that is responsible for investigating the actions of GM.

Mary Barra, the Chief Executive of GM, is prepping to go before Waxman and the committee investigating her company in a few days.

Just last week, GM conducted an internal investigation into the causes of the delayed recalls. The final report detailed significant flaws in their decision-making process. Following the release of the report, GM fired 15 employees responsible for these problems.

Lawyers That Handle Car Defects

All vehicle manufacturers are responsible for developing vehicles that are as safe as possible. Unfortunately, this does not always happen. If you have been injured because a defective part on your vehicle failed, make sure you obtain an attorney that has the knowledge and experience to go after the big automotive companies.

Did You Know? According to CNN, GM has recalled 14.4 million vehicles in the U.S. so far this year.
