Talking to Lawyers: The Who, What, When, Where, and Why

It happens to everyone, the idea of calling another person on the phone before having ever met them is an intimidating thought to a lot of people. However, there comes a point when circumstances dictate that you pick up the phone. Here are a few pointers to keep in mind so that everything is smooth and productive when you do need to contact a lawyer.

  • Who- Choosing the right lawyer can be a tricky thing. A good attorney should work well with you, explain things so you understand what is happening, and direct you to the best outcomes. Treat that first phone call as a sort of mutual interview in which both you and the lawyer you’ve called can assess whether a relationship can be beneficial to both of you.
  • What- What kind of help do you need? What kind of case do you want to pursue and what are the particulars. When you call, try to have as much documentation pertaining to your case as possible so that any questions the lawyer you’ve called could be answered
  • When- When should you get an attorney? As soon as any type of legal action against you is even threatened. Other examples of times to consult a lawyer are if you are injured on a construction site, if your employer is not paying overtime or minimum wage or docks your pay below minimum wage, if you receive any legal documents in the mail, if you are asked to sign anything that requires you to surrender any rights or are accepting money, and many more.
  • Where- Where are you in the case? Have you been issued a summons to appear? Are you just putting something together? Is there a trial date tomorrow? Where are we in the timeline? We need to know this stuff.
  • Why- Why call a lawyer? You have enough to worry about. Let us take the legal weight off of your shoulders so that you can focus on your living your life. An attorney can get you the justice you deserve.
