Is Florida Safe for Pedestrian Travelers?

Have you noticed a rash of stories in the news recently about pedestrian accidents in Florida? It may be because it is one of the most dangerous states in the country for people who commute by foot.

Recently, Smart Growth America, a public safety advocacy group ranked Florida first nationally in terms of the Pedestrian Danger Index (PDI). PDI is a measure of the likelihood of a person on foot being struck by a vehicle and killed.

According to the group, between 2003 and 2012, 5,189 people were killed while walking in Florida, representing 17.7 percent of the 29,302 traffic-related fatalities in the state during this period. The group also reported that the fatalities during this period included 233 children under 16 and 960 adults aged 65 or older.

Sadly, many of these accidents are the result of driver error, inattention and/or recklessness. In many cases, speed, distracted driving or alcohol played a role in crashes.

Why Are Pedestrian Accidents so Dangerous?

Aside from wrongful death, pedestrian accidents can result in horrific injuries like broken bones, spinal cord injuries and brain injuries. These injuries often require long-term medical care, which can place a tremendous financial burden on a victim and his or her family members.

Simply put, people should not have to suffer, because they are walking down the street. If someone is following traffic laws, he or she should have a right to safety.
