How Dangerous Are Wrong-Way Accidents?

Two women have been tragically killed in a wrong-way accident in Casselberry, Florida. An elderly male driver was driving in the wrong lane at around 2:25 in the morning, when he collided with the other car. The wrong-way driver escaped without serious injuries and could face charges for wrongful death.

This unfortunate car wreck is a textbook example of a wrong-way car accident, which are notorious for their high fatality rate.

Wrong-Way Car Accident Statistics

According to the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), 3 percent of highway accidents involve wrong-way collisions. While this number may seem low, it should be clearly understood that a shocking 22 percent of these collisions are fatal.

A reason for this high fatality rate is that almost 80 percent of all wrong-way crashes are head-on collisions, which are well known for having a high fatality rate, as well as being a cause of many severe injuries among car crash survivors.

The causes of wrong-way accidents are numerous. However, it is estimated that 60 percent of wrong-way accidents are due to alcohol.
