Head-On Motorcycle Accident Highlights Dangers to Motorcyclists

A 40-year-old man riding a motorcycle was killed by a head-on collision with a pickup in an accident that occurred in Lake County on June 24, according to authorities quoted by a clickorlando.com report.

Florida Highway Patrol sources said the car accident occurred on County Road 46-A close to Arundel Way in Sorrento when the man driving the pickup strayed into the southbound lane, colliding with the motorcyclist. Both vehicles flipped over in the crash, according to officials quoted in clickorlando.com report.

According to the news report, Florida Highway Patrol said the incident was being investigated and charges were pending.

The Dangers to Motorcyclists in Accidents with other Automobiles

Per vehicle miles traveled in 2013, motorcyclist fatalities occurred 26 times more frequently than passenger vehicle occupant fatalities in automobile accidents, according to a report by the US Department of Transportation.

The same report also listed motorcyclists as nearly five times more likely to be injured. This is despite motorcycles making up only three percent of registered vehicles in 2013 and accounting for only 0.7 percent of miles traveled by all motor vehicles in 2013.

These statistics indicate that the dangers to motorcyclists involved in automobile accidents are very serious, and this may be related to the fact that motorcyclists aren’t as protected from injury or death in accidents as the drivers and occupants of passenger vehicles are.
