Bicycle accidents often result in horrific injuries to the cyclist since they aren’t as protected as a driver would be inside their metal vehicles. It’s extremely important that cyclists are aware of the dangers, and remain constantly vigilant to give themselves a better chance of avoiding an accident. However, even at full attention, accidents happen. Here are some of the most common types of bicycle accidents.
Left Cross
The left cross is when a driver and cyclist approach an intersection from opposite sides, then the driver turns left and directly into or into the path of the cyclist. Often, the driver will say that they did not see the cyclist. These accidents can be especially brutal, and maybe even cause a pile-up wreck if there is a lot of traffic.
Right Hook
Similar to the left cross, the right hook can have devastating effects on a cyclist. This car accident occurs when a bike and car are travelling on the same side of the road, and the driver goes to turn right, but crashes into the cyclist immediately to their right. Crashes like this account for nearly 15 percent of all bicycle accidents on the streets according to the NHTSA.
Failure to Yield
Not all bike to car accidents are the fault of the drivers. Sometimes, the cyclist can be just as much to blame, if not more. Cyclists are required to operate under the same rules as a car, meaning they have to come to a complete stop at stop signs and red lights. However, many cyclists disregard this rule and pay the price. Stop at the signs and lights, or you’ll run the risk of being hit.
Open Door
Parallel parked cars don’t normally pose a danger, but cyclists must be wary. Any parallel parked car is potentially a door opening at precisely the wrong moment. Drivers could accidentally cause riders to crash into the car door, or be thrown into traffic with a poorly timed door opening. Riders should make sure to give parked cars ample space.
Always be sure to be on the lookout for these dangers when riding your bike through the streets. You, as a cyclist, have just as much right to be on the road as any driver, and you deserve to be treated with respect. That means drivers should do everything they can to avoid an accident. Drivers that cause a bicycle accident resulting in injury should be held responsible for any damages the cyclist suffers.
